The Fight Against Childhood Obesity

Childhood obesity has become a serious threat to the well-being of children around the nation. As a matter of fact it has become so widespread that it is frequently featured on news stations and in print media. It has been labeled as a national epidemic among our children. Fortunately since it has gained the attention of the media, steps have been taken to combat the growing number of obese children.

Obesity is a problem which affects more than one area of our lives. Obesity can cause health problems which could result in disability, as well as precipitate discrimination in the workplace. People who are overweight are less likely to be hired for a job based solely on how they look, with no consideration as to the qualifications they may have to perform the job. Children are not immune to discrimination when it comes to weight. Oftentimes children are the victims of bullying in school as well as not being picked, or at best being picked last, when it comes to team sports.

Overweight children tend not to socialize as much as those who are of appropriate weight, therefore socialization skills may be hampered considerably. Being shut out of social activities can leave lasting impressions on the child which can follow them long into adulthood. Children who are overweight can also suffer academically because of the teasing that they may receive which may the reluctance to go to school or attend classes while they are at school.

It is hoped that with the new educational spots on television and the national billboard campaign, childhood obesity can be drastically reduced. The educational ads encourage families to work together to make better choices when chooses what is included in meals and in choosing healthy snacks. By helping children make healthier choices in the food they eat, overweight children can be taught they have the power to change their body, and in turn change their life in a positive way.

Since health officials have recognized that obesity in children is a national and growing problem, it is hoped that there will be more preventative health policies geared toward reducing the number of overweight children. School officials have instigated a healthy lifestyle campaign at schools which includes removing soda machines and snack vending machines, while offering more fresh fruit and fresh vegetables with meals. There has also been an increased push to be active in sports and other fun activities which encourage physically active periods during the day.

Childhood obesity is a problem which can be solved when schools and parents give healthy choices in what kids eat and drink, while social organizations which promote physical activities such as the YMCA, are made available to children. It is a problem which must be met head on, for the sake of our children, and their future.
